About this position
PhD opportunity: AI-Enhanced EMC Digital Twin for Automotive WBG Converters at Coventry University, Centre for E-Mobility and Clean Growth.
This funded PhD project focuses on artificial intelligence, electrical engineering, automotive engineering, and mathematical modelling for next-generation electric mobility. The research aims to build a predictive, multi-domain electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) digital twin for automotive power converters using wide-bandgap semiconductors such as SiC and GaN.
The project addresses high-frequency EMI challenges caused by fast switching transients in WBG converters. The successful candidate will develop AI surrogates for virtual pre-compliance evaluation, including Gaussian Process Regression for conducted emissions and Physics-Informed Neural Networks that embed Maxwell’s equations for radiated fields. The work combines electromagnetic modelling, machine learning, 3D simulation, and hardware validation.
Funding: tuition fees and bursary/stipend are included. The studentship lasts 3.5 years.
Eligibility: applicants should have at least a 2:1 first degree in a relevant subject with strong marks, plus IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component. Suitable backgrounds include Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Power Electronics, Automotive Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or related disciplines.
Skills and interests: circuit analysis, power electronics, electromagnetic principles, computational programming, SPICE/PWL simulation, willingness to learn 3D electromagnetic tools, and interest in AI/ML frameworks.
How to apply: contact Prof Babis Vogiatzakis at [email protected] for more information. Applications require full supporting documentation, a covering letter, and a 2000-word supporting statement showing fit with the project.
Location: Coventry, United Kingdom.
Deadline: Sunday, 15 November 2026.
