About this position
Funded PhD opportunity at Imperial College London in cardiovascular proteomics, blood proteins, biomarker discovery, bioinformatics, epidemiology, and medical statistics.
The project is titled Using Blood Proteins to Improve the Understanding and Treatment of Heart Disease and is hosted by the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, with supervision from Professor Manuel Mayr and Professor Ioanna Tzoulaki. The research combines mass spectrometry-based proteomics with affinity-based proteomic, genetic, and clinical data from large population cohorts to identify analytically robust proteins, study cardiovascular disease mechanisms, and prioritise biomarkers and therapeutic targets.
Funding is provided jointly by the British Heart Foundation Centre of Research Excellence and the School of Public Health. The studentship covers a 3-year stipend starting from £24,323 per year, home fees, a £5,000 annual consumable allowance, and £1,000 travel support over the 3 years. Overseas applicants may apply, but they must cover the fee difference from another source.
Applicants should have a first- or upper second-class UK bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, or an overseas equivalent in epidemiology, health data analytics, biostatistics, biomedical sciences, or a related field. Experience with quantitative data analysis and large datasets is required, along with strong communication skills, the ability to review relevant literature, and willingness to complete any project-specific training. Imperial College and English-language requirements must also be met.
To apply, email Dr Magdalena Zak with a CV, at least two academic referees’ contact details, a personal statement of up to 1,000 words, and degree classifications/certificates if available. The closing date is 15 November 2026, and interviews are expected in late November to early December 2026.
