About this position

Funded PhD opportunity in climate-smart barley breeding at the University of Dundee / James Hutton Institute.

This project, part of the CIC-START industrial doctoral training programme, focuses on barley breeding, genetics, bioinformatics, agricultural sciences, food production, and soil science. The successful PhD student will be based at the James Hutton Institute, Invergowrie, and registered at the University of Dundee as the degree-awarding institution.

The research will use extensive field-trial, genotypic, and environmental datasets to develop a climate-smart barley breeding system suited to northern latitudes. Core work includes a scoping study with industry partner James Hutton Scientific Services, plus advanced genetic and bioinformatic modelling to predict how climate conditions affect yield, yield components, and flowering time, and to identify genotypes suited to future conditions.

The project offers a mix of analytical and bioinformatic training, field work, and industrial engagement. It is embedded in a wider training programme with co-created projects and an industrial placement.

Funding: Fully funded by BBSRC/UKRI, including a stipend at the UKRI rate (£21,805), tuition fees, and a small research budget. Applications are welcome from UK and overseas candidates, with one international place available under the UKRI cap.

Application: Use the FindAPhD APPLY NOW / register-interest route on the project page. Deadline shown on the listing: 2026-08-10.
