About this position

Funded PhD opportunity in Critical Energy Separation Materials at Monash University / ARC Research Hub for Critical Energy Separation Materials (CREST Hub), Australia.

This project sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, metallurgy, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, mining engineering, nanotechnology, polymers, and synthetic chemistry. Research themes include solvent-based direct lithium extraction, low-energy capture of industrial carbon dioxide, membranes for recovery and re-use of battery metals, membranes for direct lithium extraction, green chemical processes for extraction of critical minerals, separation of molecular energy carrier materials, silicon metal production by molten salt electrowinning, and unlocking critical energy materials from mining and industrial wastes.

The CREST Hub is an Australian Research Council-funded collaboration involving leading universities and industry partners. PhD candidates are supervised by leading academics and mentored by industry experts, with access to state-of-the-art facilities, pilot-scale equipment, industry placements, workshops, seminars, and conferences. Participating universities include Monash University, University of New South Wales, University of Technology Sydney, and Edith Cowan University.

Funding is provided through ARC and industry-funded PhD scholarships. The stipend is a Research Living Allowance currently valued at AUD 37,145 per annum (2026 full-time rate), tax-free, indexed, plus allowances under RTP scholarship conditions. The PhD duration is up to 3.5 years.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should meet the admission requirements of the participating university and generally hold a First Class Honours bachelor’s degree or a relevant master’s degree. A strong academic record in a relevant field is expected, along with research interest, communication skills, and the ability to work independently in a high-performing group. Applicants must be enrolled full-time and on campus, and those who already hold a PhD are not eligible.

How to apply: submit an Expression of Interest by email to [email protected]. Include a cover letter, CV with publications, academic transcript/record with certified copies, two academic referees, English-language evidence if available, and a one-page statement of research interests and motivation.

Deadline: Monday 02 November 2026, 11:55pm AEST.
