About this position
Funded PhD opportunity at Coventry University in Understanding Heterogeneity in Diabetes Prevention and Self-Management: Behavioural and Metabolic Phenotyping for Personalised Intervention.
This project sits within the Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership (MIBTP), a BBSRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnership involving Coventry University, the University of Warwick, the University of Birmingham, the University of Leicester, Aston University, and Harper Adams University. The research is based in the Centre for Discoveries in Life Sciences and focuses on type 2 diabetes, diabetes prevention, self-management, behavioural phenotyping, metabolic phenotyping, machine learning, wearable technology, and community co-design.
The project investigates why people from ethnically diverse communities engage differently with diabetes education and prevention programmes, and why metabolic outcomes vary between participants. It will use routinely collected NHS/service data, behavioural phenotyping, wearable technology, and qualitative/community-based co-design to identify barriers, facilitators, and phenotypes linked to engagement and response. The aim is to develop a personalised, culturally responsive precision-prevention strategy for diabetes.
Funding includes full tuition fees at the UK rate, a tax-free annual stipend (currently £21,805 in 2026-27), a travel/conference budget, consumables budget, and a MacBook Pro. Coventry University will cover the difference between UK and international tuition fees.
Entry requirements: a minimum 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline with at least 60% in the project element or equivalent, plus English language proficiency if applicable (IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each section, or TOEFL iBT 95 overall with 21 in each section).
How to apply: check eligibility, complete the ED&I form (which also serves as an expression of interest), then submit the application form. Review the MIBTP Data Privacy Policy and contact [email protected] for administrative questions.
