About this position

Funded PhD project in genomic stability, metabolic stability, precision fermentation, metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, and biotechnology focused on engineered Yarrowia lipolytica strains.

The project is a three-year collaboration between Imperial College London and A*STAR SIFBI in Singapore. The research asks why engineered yeast strains lose productivity during large-scale fermentation and how to improve robustness during scale-up. The work combines functional genomics in Singapore with strain engineering at Imperial, using beta-carotene-producing Yarrowia lipolytica as a model system.

Research activities include CRISPR-based knockout and overexpression libraries, scale-down bioreactor experiments, cell sorting, next-generation sequencing, and engineering promising genetic changes back into production strains to test whether stability and productivity improve at larger scale.

The student will be supervised across Imperial and the Singapore partners, with time spent in both London and Singapore arranged flexibly. At Imperial, the student joins Professor Rodrigo Ledesma-Amaro’s group in the Department of Bioengineering. The collaboration also connects to the Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein and A*STAR’s Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation (SIFBI).

Funding is provided: at Imperial, the stipend follows the UKRI standard rate and home tuition fees are covered; overseas applicants may apply if they can cover the fee difference. During the Singapore attachment, the package includes a monthly stipend, housing subsidy, airfare grant, settling-in allowance, IT allowance, and conference allowance.

Applicants must meet Imperial Bioengineering doctoral admission requirements and SRAP eligibility conditions. SRAP applicants must not be Singapore citizens or permanent residents, or existing SRAP awardees. To apply, email a single PDF containing your CV, two referees, transcripts, motivation letter (max 1500 words), and publications if any, using the specified email subject line. Deadline: 31 October 2026.
