About this position

Funded PhD opportunity in Materials Science and Physics on high-resolution time-resolved microstructural evolution under ion irradiation via TEM. The project focuses on in situ transmission electron microscopy, dynamic TEM, irradiation-driven defect dynamics, displacement cascades, phase transitions, and microstructural stability in advanced materials.

The work is hosted at Forschungszentrum Jülich in collaboration with ETH Zurich, with the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons as host institute and extended research stays at ETH Zurich. The project combines experimental TEM, ion irradiation, advanced image processing, and computational modelling (molecular dynamics, kinetic Monte Carlo, and kinetic rate theory). Applications are especially relevant to energy-related, aerospace, and nuclear materials, as well as fast transitions in amorphous metals.

Ideal applicants have experience with TEM and specimen preparation, image processing, and programming in Python, MATLAB, or similar tools. A degree enabling PhD enrolment in chemistry, materials science, physics, or a closely related field is required. Applicants must provide proof of a completed diploma at the time of application, meet doctoral enrolment conditions, and satisfy the MSCA mobility rule. A B2 English proof is required unless exempt by nationality or an English-taught degree.

This is a funded PhD project for students worldwide. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the doctoral school at RWTH Aachen, based full time at Forschungszentrum Jülich, and complete at least a three-month secondment at ETH Zurich. The application deadline stated in the post is 2026-08-21.
