About this position
Coventry University’s Centre for Discoveries in Life Science is advertising a funded PhD project on hypoxia-driven macrophage infiltration and polarisation in 3D pancreatic spheroid co-cultures. The project sits within the Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership (MIBTP), a BBSRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnership involving Coventry University, the University of Warwick, the University of Birmingham, the University of Leicester, Aston University, and Harper Adams University.
The research focuses on the tumour microenvironment in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), especially how hypoxia shapes immune evasion. Using immunology, microbiology, cancer biology, and 3D cell culture, the project will study THP-1 macrophage infiltration into hypoxic PANC-1 spheroids, changes in macrophage polarisation, and the role of candidate immunomodulatory genes identified from prior RNA-seq data. Methods include confocal fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, transcriptomic profiling (RNA-seq or spatial RNA-seq), and targeted gene knockdown.
This is a funded PhD for students worldwide. Funding includes full tuition fees at the UK rate, a tax-free annual stipend (currently £21,805 in academic year 2026-27), a travel/conference budget, a consumables budget, and use of a MacBook Pro. Coventry University also covers the difference between UK and international tuition fees.
Eligibility highlights include a minimum 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline with at least 60% in the project element or equivalent, and English language proficiency for non-native speakers (IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each section, or TOEFL iBT 95 overall with 21 in each section).
To apply, candidates should first check eligibility, complete the ED&I form as an expression of interest, and then submit the application form. Administrative questions can be sent to [email protected]. The opportunity is based in Coventry, United Kingdom.
