About this position
Funded PhD project at De Montfort University (Leicester, United Kingdom) on the effect of mesenchymal stem cells-derived extracellular vesicles in the treatment of leukaemia. The project sits at the intersection of cancer biology, cell biology, microbiology, and molecular biology, with a strong translational focus on acute myeloid leukaemia.
The research will characterise extracellular vesicles from healthy mesenchymal stem cells and refractory leukaemia cells, identify molecular markers and cargo, and explore their use as diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic tools. A key aim is to investigate whether vesicles can be engineered to deliver chemotherapeutic drugs or natural products directly to leukaemia cells, supporting more targeted and less invasive treatment strategies.
Eligibility: applicants should hold at least a 2:1 honours degree in a relevant subject. Prior laboratory experience in cell biology, molecular biology, cancer research, or a related area is desirable. Applicants must meet the university’s English language requirements.
Funding: this is a fee-waived studentship covering tuition fees only. There is no stipend for living costs, and applicants should also budget for bench fees (expected £3,000–£5,000). International applicants may need to cover the difference between home and international tuition rates. Funding duration is 3 years.
Application deadline: 30 October 2026. Apply by completing the DMU Scholarship Application Form and emailing it to PGRscholarships@dmu.ac.uk, along with the required documents: PhD research proposal, two academic references, passport, certificates/transcripts/HEAR reports, and English language proof if required.
