About this position

Michael Leamy at the University of Vermont is seeking postdoctoral researchers and PhD students for two funded research projects in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, applied mechanics, applied mathematics, structural dynamics, wave propagation, and nonlinear vibrations.

Project 1: Nonlinear Wave-Based Exploration of Jointed Structures. This project studies bolted and riveted joints in aerospace frames, focusing on nonlinear, frequency- and amplitude-dependent scattering of waves in jointed structures. The work is funded by the National Science Foundation (award 2545811).

Project 2: Bandgap Control of Elastic–Plastic Wave Propagation for Lightweight Ballistic Protection. This project investigates phononic crystals, locally resonant metamaterials, elastic-plastic wave propagation, and bandgap behavior for protective structures. Funding is internal and anticipated from the Army Research Office.

Ideal applicants should have a background in mechanical or aerospace engineering, applied mechanics, or applied mathematics. Helpful experience includes perturbation methods (such as multiple scales), MATLAB, Python, and/or finite element analysis. U.S. citizenship is not required, and international students are encouraged to apply.

To inquire, email [email protected] with a statement of interest, relevant background, and a resume.
