About this position
This fully funded PhD position at KU Leuven's Hydraulics Laboratory focuses on developing an integrated geotechnical-hydrodynamic model for offshore structures subjected to cyclic wave loading. The research aims to advance the understanding of wave-flexible structure-soil interactions using high-fidelity numerical simulations, including CFD-based multiphysics and DEM-based solvers. The project will contribute to optimizing offshore structural design and improving geotechnical-hydrodynamic interaction modeling. The Hydraulics Laboratory at KU Leuven is renowned for its research in process understanding, numerical modeling, and statistical analysis of water cycle phenomena in urban environments, river systems, and coastal zones.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant research group and benefit from supervision by experts in coastal and computational engineering, with opportunities for international collaboration with institutions such as Uppsala University, UVigo, and PARI. Applicants should hold or be about to obtain a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Coastal Engineering, Geotechnics, Computational Mechanics, or a related discipline, and possess a strong background in fluid mechanics, soil mechanics, and numerical methods.
Experience with SPH methods, FEA, or DEM modeling is advantageous, as are programming skills (C++, Python, CUDA) and familiarity with high-performance computing. The position requires enthusiasm, self-motivation, teamwork, and strong English communication skills. KU Leuven offers an inclusive and diverse research environment and encourages applications from all backgrounds. The application deadline is November 14, 2025.
Interested candidates should apply via the KU Leuven job portal, submitting a cover letter, CV, and academic transcripts. For further information, contact Prof. dr.
Tomohiro Suzuki or Prof. dr. ir. Stijn François.
