Histories of Sexual Health Research at Aston: Tracing Sexual History through the Aston University Archives Aston University in United Kingdom

This PhD position at Aston University invites candidates to explore the rich history of sexual health research through the Aston University Archives Centre (AUAC), an international and interdisciplinary hub dedicated to archiving challenges in the twenty-first century. The project leverages archival materials to uncover hidden histories of sexuality, gender, emotions, and social movements, blending theoretical and methodological diversity to illuminate the complexity and politics of social life across local and global contexts.

Central to the research is Aston University's pivotal role in sexual health history, particularly in Birmingham. The appointment of sexologists Dr Martin Cole and Dr Philip Cauthery led to the creation of a landmark student health centre and significant studies, such as the 1969 publication on student sexual behaviour. Other milestones include the influential “Know Thyself” lectures, the screening of Dr Cole’s film Growing Up, the publication of The Fundamentals of Sex, and involvement in the Birmingham Pregnancy Advisory Service following the Abortion Act.

The doctoral project will focus on three main research questions: (1) What sexual health research was conducted at Aston between 1960 and 1989? (2) How was this research reported and what impact did it have, as evidenced through the archives? (3) How did this research connect to broader social movements on sexuality during the period? The outcome will contribute to sex studies, archival research, and the history of the era, with relevance to education, culture, politics, and society.

Applicants should hold or expect to achieve a First or Upper Second Class Honours undergraduate degree and a Masters degree with Merit or Distinction in relevant subjects. Overseas qualifications are considered if equivalent. Experience with archival or historical research is desirable but not essential, as support is available. English language proficiency is required, and evidence can be submitted later. Funding covers all tuition fees and provides an annual stipend. Candidates are responsible for relocation and campus visit costs.
