The IRI THESys Graduate Programme at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin offers a flexible and interdisciplinary doctoral training focused on the dynamics of human-environment relations. The programme is designed for doctoral researchers whose dissertation projects align with the research areas of IRI THESys, including climate change, land use, water and energy governance, food-fuel-fibre production, resource extraction, biodiversity management, and urban-rural interactions. The curriculum is structured into four modules: developing interdisciplinary competencies, deepening disciplinary specialisation, discovering new disciplines, and training soft/entrepreneurial skills. Students benefit from a vibrant academic community, bi-weekly colloquia, summer schools, and access to courses and workshops at the Humboldt Graduate School.

International elements are integral, with guest lecturers, intercultural training, and thematic reference to global contexts. While integrated internships are not offered, the programme supports students in finding internships through its extensive partner network. There are no teaching obligations, and the mode of study is hybrid, allowing for both in-person and online participation. The programme duration is nine semesters or more, with entry possible in both winter and summer semesters. Tuition fees are waived, but students must pay a semester contribution of approximately 300 EUR and cover living costs estimated at a minimum of 1,500 EUR per month.

Applicants must have an excellent Master's degree in relevant disciplines and be enrolled at a university with a thesis topic within the scope of IRI THESys research. Their supervisor must be an IRI THESys member, and funding must be secured for at least two years, as the university does not provide funding opportunities. Very good English language skills are required, while German is not necessary. The application process involves submitting documents to the coordinator and applying for programme membership online.
