IWRI - Postdoctoral Fellow: Membrane-Based Pretreatment for SWRO Desalination Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Morocco

Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), through its International Water Research Institute (IWRI), is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow for an applied research project focused on membrane-based pretreatment for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination. The position is based in Benguerir, Morocco, within a research environment centered on water, climate, sustainability, and technological innovation.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development, optimization, and scale-up of advanced pretreatment solutions for seawater desalination, with strong emphasis on membrane-based processes. The role combines laboratory experimentation, data analysis, field missions, and pilot-scale trials, making it well suited to a researcher who enjoys both fundamental and applied work.

Key research activities include seawater monitoring and characterization, statistical and mathematical modeling of feed-water quality and pretreatment performance, design and operation of a lab-scale membrane pretreatment system, development of operation and maintenance protocols, and pilot testing under real seawater conditions. The postdoctoral fellow will also assess performance limitations such as fouling, propose corrective actions, and contribute to technical reporting, knowledge transfer, and scientific dissemination through publications and conferences.

Eligibility highlights: candidates should hold a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Water-Process Engineering, Membrane Materials and Processes, or a closely related field. Experience in desalination and/or filtration systems is required, together with hands-on expertise in water treatment and water quality analysis. A background in ceramic membrane materials and processes is considered a strong advantage. The institute also seeks excellent communication, teamwork, and scientific writing skills, as well as fluency in English and French. Fieldwork travel is expected and a valid driver’s license is required.
