The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, through its LKR Leichtmetallkompetenzzentrum Ranshofen, is offering a Junior Scientist position that integrates research activities with the mandatory completion of a PhD thesis. The focus is on developing cross-contamination-resistant titanium alloy concepts, addressing both materials and processing technologies in the context of recycling and material circularity. This research is highly relevant to industry partners in automotive, aerospace, space, and rail vehicle sectors across the EU, where titanium alloys are of critical strategic importance.

As a Junior Scientist, you will conduct advanced research and process investigations in titanium alloy materials technologies, utilizing state-of-the-art characterization methods such as high-energy X-ray diffraction. You will work in an industry-relevant fundamental research field, aiming to become an internationally recognized expert in titanium and its processing technologies. Responsibilities include supporting project management in national and international cooperation projects, collaborating with partners from various industrial companies, and independently planning, executing, and evaluating scientific experiments. You will process and document results for presentation, contribute to applications for further research projects, publish findings in scientific journals, and participate in international conferences.

The position offers opportunities to develop core skills in advanced materials characterization techniques, with knowledge transferable to other materials. You will supervise interns or master's students, find solutions to previously unanswered research questions, and actively contribute your perspectives to support projects and address challenges. The role is embedded in a collaborative doctoral programme through the AIT PhD programme, conducted in partnership with renowned universities. You will be supervised and mentored by AIT experts and collaborate with project partners from industry and other research organizations.

Applicants must hold or be close to completing a master's degree in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, physics, or a similar field. Initial expertise in developing test plans for process and material investigations, a solid understanding of materials science, and experience with characterization methods (especially electron microscopy and diffraction methods) are advantageous. Programming skills (C++, Python, etc.) are beneficial. Candidates should demonstrate independent and structured working style, strong communication and teamwork skills, passion for research, creativity, and visionary thinking. Excellent written and spoken English skills are required; German skills are an advantage. Strong motivation to pursue a PhD thesis is mandatory, as completion of a PhD is integral to the position.

The minimum gross annual salary is EUR 56,784 (full-time, 38.5 h/week) according to the collective agreement, with the actual salary determined individually based on qualifications and experience.
