?? The Project
Magnetotactic bacteria are tiny living compasses.
Inside their cells, they produce magnetosomes – nanosized crystals of magnetite (Fe3O4) perfectly aligned like a compass needle.
?? Your challenge: understand how these biological nanomagnets organize, interact, and behave, using advanced microscopy techniques such as:
Off-axis electron holography
High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM)
?? Goal: build a magnetic phase diagram linking magnetosome size, shape, and spacing to their magnetic state.
?? What You’ll Learn
?? Microbiological techniques & electron microscopy sample preparation
?? High-resolution and magnetic imaging (electron holography)
?? Quantitative data analysis at the nanoscale
?? A deep understanding of nanobiomagnetism — where physics meets biology
? This internship naturally leads to a fully funded PhD continuing this project.
