This opportunity supports researchers to conduct independent research at a host institution in Japan, such as a university or national research institution. The fellowship is open to many fields, with preference for natural science, engineering, medicine, and agriculture. It is especially suitable for PhD holders seeking international research experience, collaboration, and a strong publication profile.

Funding: monthly allowance of JPY 220,000, an arrival fund of JPY 120,000, round-trip economy airfare to Tokyo, and overseas travel insurance. The fellowship is intended to cover living expenses and research activities.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must be non-Japanese nationals, hold a PhD by the application date, be 45 years old or younger, have a full-time job in their home country and plan to return after the fellowship, have no long-term prior/current stay in Japan, and secure acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying. English or Japanese ability is required.

Application window: 1 June 2026 to 30 June 2026 (Japan Standard Time). Applications are submitted by email to the foundation with the required PDF documents, including the application form, reason for application, research plan, CV/publications, recommendation letter, PhD certificate, and host professor acceptance letter.
