About this position

Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science at University of California, Berkeley is inviting nominations for the 2027-2030 Miller Research Postdoctoral Fellowship. This is a highly competitive postdoctoral fellowship for exceptional young scientists in the basic sciences, with research hosted on the Berkeley campus and supported by a UC Berkeley faculty host.

The fellowship is designed for researchers who have recently earned, or are about to earn, the Ph.D. degree. Eligible candidates must not have received the Ph.D. before 2025-01-01 and must receive it by 2027-08-31. Applicants may have no more than two years of postdoctoral experience from other institutions at the proposed start date, and those who have already held assistant professor, associate professor, or professor roles are not eligible. Non-U.S. citizens must be eligible for J-1 Scholar status and demonstrate English proficiency before award; the program does not support H1B status.

Funding is strong: the award provides a $95,000 stipend with 3% annual increases, a $10,000/year research fund, travel to Berkeley for the fellow and immediate family, a $3,000 relocation allowance, and standard UC benefits. The total estimated value is about $378,000 over three years.

Applicants cannot apply directly or self-nominate. A nomination must be submitted online first, and only invited nominees may proceed to the application stage. The application requires a one-page research statement, CV with publications, three reference letters, and a support letter from a proposed UC Berkeley faculty host. Applicants must identify at least one host department and faculty host, and are encouraged to contact potential Berkeley hosts early to discuss research interests and collaboration.

The nomination deadline is 2026-09-10 and the full application deadline is 2026-10-09. This opportunity is especially relevant for researchers in physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy, and computer science, with an interdisciplinary emphasis across the basic sciences.
