About this position
ICIQ (Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia) is offering four postdoctoral positions through the MERCI programme, a Horizon Europe COFUND / Marie Curie initiative designed to support highly talented, autonomous researchers on a clear pathway toward R3-level independence and future Group Leader roles.
The fellowship is based in Tarragona, Spain, within ICIQ’s vibrant international research environment and its network of 19 research groups. Candidates may propose their own research project and choose a mentor Group Leader within ICIQ’s three main research areas, provided the project is aligned with the centre’s research lines.
This is a 5-year postdoctoral opportunity split into two phases: Phase 1 is a 36-month contract with an average gross salary of €60,000 per year, funded by the EU; Phase 2 adds 24 months with an average gross salary of €50,000 per year, funded by ICIQ. The package also includes, when applicable, a €100/month family allowance, a €400/month research budget, a €1,800 starting allowance to help settle in Tarragona, and €350/month for training, networking, conferences, secondments, and dissemination activities.
The programme emphasises mentoring, monitoring, and career development. Each fellow will work closely with an internationally recognised mentor, follow a personalised Career Development Plan, and benefit from training in research, open science, digital skills, leadership, grant writing, entrepreneurship, and well-being. Fellows may also engage in secondments at partner institutions, and the programme supports access to conferences, scientific events, and ICIQ core facilities.
Eligibility is open to applicants of any nationality, but the Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rule applies: applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Spain for more than 12 months in the 36 months before the deadline. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree, have 2 to 10 years of postdoctoral experience, and must not be permanently employed by ICIQ at the deadline.
The application deadline is 29 November 2026 at 10:31 (Europe/Madrid). Applications must include a CV and research summary, a research proposal, motivation letter, copy of the PhD title, proof of postdoctoral experience, an ethical self-assessment questionnaire, preferred hosting group(s), at least two reference contacts, a statement confirming compliance with the mobility rule, and agreement to personal data treatment. Only complete applications will be evaluated.
