About this position

M.S. positions in crayfish aquaculture and invasive species control are available at Auburn University in the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences (SFAAS), working with the Crustacean and Molluscan Ecology Lab and the Aquatic Reproductive Physiology Lab.

The project focuses on Procambarus clarkii (red swamp crayfish), a species valued in aquaculture but also recognized as an invasive species worldwide. Students will contribute to an international collaborative project with Auburn University, Ben Gurion University (Israel), and the USGS to develop sustainable, escape-resistant crayfish aquaculture systems.

Research topics include recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), indoor production strategies, habitat design, photoperiod and temperature optimization, aquatic-terrestrial habitat combinations, genetic and physiological mechanisms of sexual development, and the production of neofemales to support all-male broods and invasive species control. The work is strongly oriented toward aquatic ecology, aquatic physiology, reproductive physiology, genetics, histology, and life-history analysis.

Funding: $22,500 per year for two years. Start date is January 2027 or later, pending availability of funds.

Eligibility highlights: B.S. in biology or a related discipline; knowledge of aquatic ecology and/or physiology; ability to work independently and collaboratively across institutions; ability to obtain a U.S. driver's license and vehicle; legal authorization to work in the U.S. Experience in reproductive physiology or crustacean decapod husbandry is a strong asset.
