About this position

MSc opportunity at the University of Guelph in the School of Environmental Sciences (SES), located in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

This thesis-based MSc project focuses on microplastics in agricultural soils, with particular attention to how microplastics enter soils through municipal composts and biosolids. The research aims to develop and validate innovative methods for detecting and characterizing microplastics by combining simultaneous thermal analysis (STA–FTIR) and FTIR microscopy. A key goal is to improve the accuracy and efficiency of microplastic detection while benchmarking these approaches against conventional methods.

The project will also build a reference database of thermal and spectral signatures for consumer plastics commonly found in compost and biosolid streams, then apply these tools to real-world organic amendments and agricultural soils. The outcome will be validated analytical workflows and open-access reference datasets to support future terrestrial microplastic monitoring.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree in Soil Science, Environmental Science, or a related field. Experience with soil sampling, field and laboratory research, and a valid driver’s license are considered assets. Prior experience with STA, FTIR, or terrestrial microplastics research is not required, though it is useful. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, detail-oriented, and interested in analytical method development and environmental research.

Start date: January 2027 (preferred, but flexible).

How to apply: email unofficial transcripts, CV, a 1-page letter describing research experience and interests, and a list of three references to the contacts provided in the post.

Contacts: Serra-Willow Buchanan ([email protected]) and Adam Gillespie ([email protected]).
