About this position

MSCA DN PhD Opportunity in Biopesticides and Biomaterials for Plant-Pathogen Interactions (SUSBIOCROP DC3)

This PhD position is hosted by Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium, within the PhotoBiocatalysis department/group. The project is part of the SUSBIOCROP network and is funded through Horizon Europe - MSCA (Marie Curie Grant Agreement No. 101226772). It is a full-time, temporary doctoral position with an expected start date of 1 February 2027.

The research builds on a recent discovery of a new mechanism of plant immunity triggered by the external application of lignocellulose-derived oligosaccharides. The project will explore the production of cellulose-based biomaterials and their use as elicitors in plant defence responses. A major part of the work involves extensive characterization of the plant immune system and associated signalling events at the molecular level. In parallel, the biomaterials will be characterized using polymer-oriented techniques.

This opportunity is especially relevant for candidates interested in agricultural biotechnology, plant biology, biomaterials, and polymer/materials characterization. The advertised research field is Agricultural sciences » Agricultural products, and the role expects a strong academic background at the master’s level or equivalent. Excellent English is required.

Applications should be submitted through the SUSBIOCROP open positions webpage. The application deadline is 2 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Brussels). Prospective applicants should consult the project website for the full position details and submission instructions.
