About this position
FlexCAT is an international Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network offering 15 funded PhD positions across a Europe-wide consortium of academic and non-academic partners.
The project focuses on developing innovative strategies to study and target intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) in proteins. These regions are important in cell signalling and disease, especially cancer, but are difficult to address with conventional drug discovery approaches. Using β-catenin as a key model system, FlexCAT combines cutting-edge research with interdisciplinary training, international secondments, and collaboration with industry and academic partners.
Positions are hosted at institutions including the Medical University of Graz, TU Wien, the University of Würzburg, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the University of Milan, the University of Sussex, the University of Luxembourg, Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology, Amsterdam UMC, the University of Göttingen, and Helmholtz Zentrum München.
Each position is a full-time, funded doctoral appointment for 36 months (40 hours/week), with remuneration according to MSCA Doctoral Network rules and country correction factors. Mobility allowance and, where eligible, family allowance are included. In some cases, a fourth year of support may be available through the host institution and/or the recruiting PI’s grants.
FlexCAT also offers structured doctoral training, an individual career development plan, transferable skills courses, networking opportunities, and participation in international doctoral training events across Europe. Doctoral candidates will also complete at least one secondment with an academic or industry partner and have opportunities to present at conferences and contribute to dissemination, outreach, and innovation activities.
Eligible applicants must hold or soon complete a relevant science Master’s degree with excellent results, must not already hold a doctoral degree, and must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule and the host university’s PhD admission requirements. Excellent English is required (minimum B2 level).

Applicants of any nationality may apply. Candidates must not already hold a doctoral degree and must hold, or shortly complete, a science Master’s degree with excellent results, meeting the admission requirements of the host doctoral programme. MSCA mobility rules apply: applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the recruiting country for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment. Excellent spoken and written English is required (minimum B2 level), along with the ability to communicate research clearly to diverse audiences. Applicants should be strongly motivated for multidisciplinary, international doctoral research, hands-on experimental work, mandatory academic/industry secondments, publishing in international journals, presenting at conferences, and contributing to network activities, training, communication, and dissemination. Technical skills depend on the individual doctoral candidate project.
