About this position

The Centre for Ice, Cryosphere, Carbon and Climate (iC3) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway is seeking researchers interested in applying for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowship focused on harmful algae and their toxins in Svalbard fjords. This interdisciplinary centre of excellence is located in Tromsø, Arctic Norway, and conducts cutting-edge research across oceans, ice, cryosphere, carbon, and climate in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Successful candidates will design and pursue their own research project for 2–3 years at iC3, with strong institutional support throughout the MSCA proposal writing process. The research will be supervised by Dr Philipp Assmy, whose team investigates the distribution, impact, and environmental drivers of harmful algae and their toxins in polar marine ecosystems. Only candidates with extensive prior expertise in this research area will be considered.

iC3 offers comprehensive support for MSCA applicants, including training sessions, proposal templates, examples of successful applications, and critical reviews. Over 42% of MSCA applicants with iC3 have secured funding in recent years, far exceeding the European average. If awarded, fellows will join a vibrant community of over 25 PhD and postdoc researchers, benefit from outstanding research infrastructure, mentorship, training, and regular social events, and be fully integrated into one of iC3’s research groups.

The fellowship is funded through Horizon Europe and includes salary, research costs, and a family allowance for grantees relocating with partners and/or children. Applicants must hold a PhD by September 2026, have no more than 8 years of full-time academic research experience, and possess excellent English skills. The position is open to candidates of all nationalities, but relocation to Norway is required upon award.

To apply, send your CV and a brief outline of your proposed research project to Dr Philipp Assmy ([email protected]) with 'MSCA candidate enquiry' in the subject line. If you are unsure about eligibility, contact Till Bruckner ([email protected]) before reaching out to the supervisor. Early engagement is encouraged, as candidates entering iC3’s support programme before March 2026 will also benefit from the host university’s Arctic MSCA support programme. The application deadline for MSCA proposals is August 1, 2026, but proposal preparation requires considerable time and effort.
