About this position
The Centre for Ice, Cryosphere, Carbon and Climate (iC3) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway invites researchers to apply for a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowship focused on modeling the physical and biogeochemical interactions between glacier ice, sediments, and the oceans. Located in Tromsø, the capital of Arctic Norway, iC3 is a leading interdisciplinary research hub specializing in polar science, including oceans, ice, cryosphere, carbon, and climate in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions.
This opportunity is open to candidates of all nationalities who wish to pursue a research project of their own design for 2–3 years at iC3. The research will center on coupled physical-biochemical models of glacier-ocean interactions, with a particular focus on the European Arctic. Applicants are encouraged to develop their own research questions and methodologies within this broad area, allowing for significant academic freedom and creativity.
Dr. Pedro Duarte will serve as the potential supervisor for successful candidates. Interested applicants should read more about his work at this interview. iC3 offers robust support throughout the MSCA proposal process, including training sessions, templates, examples of successful proposals, and multiple rounds of critical review. Over the past three years, iC3 has achieved a 42% success rate for MSCA applicants, significantly higher than the European average.
Successful fellows will join a vibrant community of over 25 PhD and postdoc researchers, benefit from outstanding research infrastructure, mentorship, training programmes, and regular social events. The collaborative environment ensures that each postdoc is fully integrated into a research group, fostering interdisciplinary exchange and innovation. Tromsø is a hub for polar research, with close connections to the Norwegian Polar Institute, NORCE, and other research and policy organizations.
Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent by September 2026 and have no more than 8 years of full-time academic research experience. Excellent English language skills are required, and the MSCA grant mandates relocation to Norway. Family allowances are available for grantees relocating with partners and/or children. If you are unsure about eligibility, contact Till Bruckner at [email protected] for clarification.
To apply, send your CV and a brief outline of your proposed research project to Dr. Pedro Duarte ([email protected]) with 'MSCA candidate enquiry' in the subject line. Early engagement is recommended, especially for those wishing to benefit from additional support by entering iC3’s programme before March 2026. For more information about iC3 and its MSCA support programme, visit this page and the news and events page.
This is not a direct job vacancy; applicants must write and submit a competitive MSCA proposal to secure funding. The deadline for MSCA proposals is 1 August 2026, but the process requires considerable preparation. The fellowship offers a unique opportunity to conduct cutting-edge polar science in a collaborative and supportive environment.
