About this position

MS / PhD Graduate Assistantships are available for the Simulation and Terrain-based River Elevation Advanced Mapping (STREAM) project at the University of Maine in Orono, Maine, USA.

The project focuses on floodplain mapping, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, and advanced terrain-based river elevation analysis for rural and low-population areas of Maine. Students will use high-resolution elevation data and modeling techniques to calculate 100-year floodplain surfaces and support flood-risk assessment, mitigation planning, and emergency management. The work also includes community engagement, participatory research, outreach, facilitation of community meetings, and science communication.

Students will be co-supervised by faculty and USGS collaborators, including Rachel Schattman, Christina Murphy, and Noah Charney, with collaboration from the US Geological Survey Maine Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the USGS New England Water Science Center. Degree options include Biology (with concentration in Ecology), Wildlife Ecology, Plant Soil and Environmental Sciences, or Ecology and Environmental Sciences.

Eligibility highlights include a B.S. in biology, agricultural sciences, or equivalent for M.S. and Ph.D. applicants; an M.S. in a similar field is strongly preferred for Ph.D. applicants. Prior field and laboratory experience, interest in socio-ecological systems, good communication skills, and familiarity with data management and GIS are preferred or desirable.

Funding includes a stipend of $28,000 to $31,333 per year, medical and dental insurance support, tuition coverage for at least 13 credit hours, and annual renewal based on funding availability and student performance. The assistantship is expected to last 4 years for Ph.D. students and 2 years for M.S. students.
