About this position
The University of Glasgow is offering a cohort-based Clinical PhD Research Fellowship for health professionals working on multiple long-term conditions (MLTC), also known as multimorbidity. The programme is designed to develop the next generation of clinical academic leaders who can use multidisciplinary research to address important clinical questions in complex patient populations.
The post is a 3-year PhD fellowship starting in August 2027, with an optional 6-month preparatory periodfull-time salary, PhD fees, and research costs. Applicants will be appointed to a clinical salary negotiated after appointment in line with the relevant UK clinical academic training guidance.
Positions are based in the University of Glasgow and may also be located across collaborating Scottish institutions including Dundee, Edinburgh, or St Andrews. Up to seven fellowships are available. The programme is intended for experienced clinical practitioners who want to undertake a PhD while remaining clinically active, with clinical work during the PhD limited to a maximum of one day per week, or up to two days for craft specialities.
Eligible applicants include professionals from Medicine, Nursing/Midwifery, Allied Health Professions (such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, and dietetics), Pharmacy, Dentistry, Clinical Psychology, and Healthcare Sciences. Medical applicants must be doctors in training with the appropriate training status or GPs who completed training normally within the last four years full-time equivalent. Dentists must be in training or within four years full-time equivalent of completing training. UK-registered NMAHPs, pharmacists, and other clinical disciplines must have at least two years of full-time equivalent post-registration experience, and healthcare science professionals must be clinically active in the NHS.
Applicants must be registered with the relevant UK professional body and licensed to practise in the UK. They may apply a maximum of three times to this programme. Candidates must choose two advertised projects in order of preference and must discuss their first-choice project with the relevant supervisory team before submitting the formal application. Doctors and dentists in training need permission for time out of training and must still be in training at the start of the PhD. Candidates may apply a maximum of 3 times and must select two projects in order of preference, discussing their first-choice project with the relevant supervisory team before applying.
