About this position

The University of Oulu, a leading multidisciplinary and international research university in Finland, is offering multiple short-term doctoral researcher positions in health and biosciences. These positions are fully funded by the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) and the research units, providing an excellent opportunity for doctoral researchers, especially those working as professionals in healthcare, to advance their research careers.

The positions are available in the doctoral degree programmes of medicine, biochemistry and molecular medicine, dentistry, and health sciences. The appointments are fixed-term, ranging from 3 to 6 months, and will be available throughout 2027. The university welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds, including different ages, genders, languages, cultures, and minority groups, fostering an inclusive scientific community.

Successful candidates will benefit from a supportive and enthusiastic academic environment, clear opportunities for professional development, and wellness benefits such as ePassi, which covers sports, culture, and well-being. The University of Oulu promotes flexibility and work-life balance, making it an attractive workplace for researchers.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field, with priority given to those working as healthcare professionals (e.g., Licentiate of Medicine, Licentiate of Dentistry, Master of Health Sciences). Candidates must have doctoral study rights at the University of Oulu. Additional eligibility conditions include that the principal supervisor can sign a commitment letter for only one applicant, and those who have previously received more than one-year doctoral researcher position from the University of Oulu are not eligible.

The salary for these positions is based on Finnish university salary chart levels 2–4, with a starting gross salary of approximately €2500–3200 per month, plus a personal work performance component (up to 50% of the job-specific component). The positions are full-time and temporary, with a 100% full-time equivalent.

To apply, candidates must submit their application in English via the University’s Varbi recruitment system by 31 August 2026. Required documents include a cover letter (max. 1 page), CV (max. 3 pages, following Finnish National Board on Research Integrity TENK guidelines), a research plan (max. 4 pages plus references, following Academy of Finland guidelines), and a commitment form signed by the supervisor. The commitment letter must confirm the supervisor’s assurance that the research unit director is aware of and committed to the financial obligations related to these positions.

Selection criteria include motivation and commitment to the research topic and doctoral training, academic competence, relevant skills and previous research experience, scientific quality and innovativeness of the research, and feasibility of the research plan. All applicants will be informed of the selection outcome by email.

For further information about admission and doctoral study rights, visit the UniOGS webpage. For employment and work permit questions, contact [email protected]. For selection process inquiries, contact Coordinator Emmi Alakärppä at [email protected] (note: inquiries will not be answered between 9 July and 2 August 2026).

This is a unique opportunity to join a vibrant research community and contribute to impactful research in health and biosciences at the University of Oulu.
