About this position

The NOMIS-ISTA Fellowship Program is an interdisciplinary postdoctoral research opportunity jointly launched by the NOMIS Foundation and the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA). It is designed for exceptional postdoctoral scientists who want the freedom to pursue big unanswered questions and high-risk ideas at the intersection of two or more disciplines.

ISTA offers a highly collaborative and enabling research environment, with dual mentorship from established scientists, access to cutting-edge scientific service units, and support for research and travel. The fellowship is a three-year fully funded position with a minimum gross annual salary of EUR 76,986.

Proposals are invited in Biology, Neuroscience, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Earth Science, Astro sciences, and related disciplines. The program encourages interdisciplinary skill development, scientific integrity and leadership training, and career development support. Teaching at ISTA is encouraged but not required.

Eligibility is aimed at researchers who have already completed a PhD (or equivalent) by the time of recruitment, which is within 8 months of the application deadline. Candidates are preferably expected to have first postdoctoral experience and/or interdisciplinary training, although outstanding applicants outside these criteria may still be considered. English proficiency must be excellent.

The application deadline is 10 September 2026 at 14:00 CEST. Shortlisted candidates must be available for a remote interview in November 2026, and successful fellows must begin within six months of notification.

Institution: Institute of Science and Technology Austria, Klosterneuburg, Austria. ISTA states a commitment to equality and diversity.
