About this position

Charles University’s Institute of International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, is offering a full-time postdoctoral research position based in Prague, Czechia, starting in January 2027 for 24 months. The postdoc will contribute to two Horizon Europe projects: CUSP (Consolidating European Science Diplomacy) and QUEST (The European Union’s Quest for a Relational Open Strategic Autonomy).

The role focuses on science diplomacy, research security, and open strategic autonomy. In CUSP, the researcher will help produce a taxonomy, mapping, and analysis of the European science diplomacy ecosystem and contribute to a working group on the science diplomacy of large research infrastructures. In QUEST, the postdoc will help design and carry out a cross-national comparative case study on the innovation- and research-related dimensions of open strategic autonomy, especially its relationship with research security.

The position also allows time for independent research and publication in the areas of science diplomacy and/or research security. Responsibilities include research design and implementation, literature review, report and policy paper writing, data collection and management, qualitative and/or quantitative analysis, elite interviews, fact checking, and publishing in high-quality journals. The postdoc will work independently under the supervision of Mitchell Young and in collaboration with the project team and international partner institutions.

Applicants should hold completed doctoral studies in European Studies, Area Studies, Public Policy, International Relations, or a related discipline, ideally with a demonstrated interest in science diplomacy, research security, higher education studies, or research policy. PhD candidates whose dissertation has already been submitted for defense and who plan to defend in the spring may also be considered. Strong publication experience, teamwork skills, deadline awareness, and excellent English communication skills are required.

The monthly salary is 50,000 to 55,000 CZK, including social and health insurance. The post is funded through Horizon Europe. Applications should be sent by email to [email protected] by 31 October 2026, together with a structured CV, motivation letter, and list of publications. Short-listed candidates will be invited to an online interview in mid-November 2026.
