About this position

Azuma Group is hiring at the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland, for two PhD students and one Master's student to join an NCN-OPUS 30 project titled “Engineering bacterial protein cages into virus-like nanocarriers for programmable nucleic acid manipulation.”

The project explores how viruses package nucleic acids into confined spaces and uses synthetic biology and protein engineering to uncover general principles of nucleic acid packaging while developing tools beyond natural viral systems. Research topics include nucleic acid encapsulation into engineered protein cages, stimulus-responsive cargo release, and characterization using biochemical, biophysical, and structural methods including cryo-EM.

PhD positions (x2): fully funded 4-year positions with exceptional remuneration, including an additional salary top-up of approximately 4,000 PLN gross/month on top of doctoral school remuneration. Applicants should hold a master's degree and show strong interest in synthetic biology, protein engineering, and RNA biology.

Master's student position (x1): funded 2-year position with a student scholarship of 2,000 PLN gross/month. This role is aimed at students currently enrolled in a biotechnology or related program in Poland.

Deadline: August 23, 2026. Planned start: October 2026.
