About this position
The University of Bristol’s School of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences is inviting applications for postgraduate research study in Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, with awards available for both PhD and MSc by Research.
This programme covers a broad range of research themes, including cancer biology, engineering biology, genome biology, infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance, modulation and translation of immunity, and organelle biology and protein homeostasis. The school is described as an internationally recognised centre of excellence, combining fundamental research with translational work aimed at clinically useful outcomes.
Students benefit from extensive research training, supervision by a primary supervisor and wider team, and access to world-class facilities such as proteomics, bioimaging, and cryoEM. The PhD normally runs up to four years full-time, while the MSc by Research is typically up to two years full-time.
Entry requirements: a first or upper second-class honours degree, or international equivalent, in biomedical science or a related discipline for PhD entry. MSc by Research applicants with a lower second-class degree may also be considered. Applicants should identify one or two potential supervisors and are strongly encouraged to contact them by email before applying.
Funding: funded places and scholarships are listed on the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences website. Self-funded students are welcome, and international students with external funding from their government or other organisations may apply.
Timing: applications will open shortly. Self-funded applications have no fixed deadline, but for September 2027 entry the suggested complete-application deadline is 30 June 2027 for overseas students and 31 July 2027 for home students.
Location: Clifton campus, University of Bristol, United Kingdom.
