About this position
The Nonlinear Nanophotonics Group (NLNP) at the University of Twente, led by Prof. David Marpaung, is inviting applications for several open PhD and postdoctoral positions in the field of integrated photonics. The research topics include integrated lasers for portable optical clocks, thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) circuits for RF microwave photonics, ultra-narrow linewidth Brillouin lasers, and integrated quantum light sources. The group offers a stimulating research environment with world-class facilities and close collaboration with photonic industries in the Netherlands.
Applicants should have a strong background in photonics, physics, electronic engineering, or closely related areas. Desired experience includes fabrication of photonic and piezoelectric materials (such as silicon, silicon nitride, aluminum nitride, lithium niobate), nonlinear optics (especially stimulated Brillouin scattering), experimental work on microwave photonics and optical communication systems, modeling or experimental work on lasers and optical frequency combs, and work on optical fiber devices. Familiarity with optical simulation software (COMSOL, Lumerical, Phoenix Optodesigner) is a plus.
PhD positions are fully funded for four years, with a starting gross salary of €3,059 per month, increasing to €3,881 in the fourth year. Postdoctoral positions are available for two years, with a gross salary ranging from €3,546 to €5,538 per month, depending on experience and qualifications. The group provides excellent mentorship, professional and personal development programs, and opportunities for collaboration with industry partners.
To apply, candidates should prepare a one-page motivation letter, a detailed CV with a publication list, academic transcripts, and contact details of at least two academic referees. Applications should be submitted via email to [email protected]. Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss the projects with Prof. David Marpaung before submitting their application.
Key research areas: integrated photonics, nonlinear optics, microwave photonics, optical clocks, thin-film lithium niobate, Brillouin lasers, quantum light sources, photonic materials, optical frequency combs.
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
