About this position

The English Department at the University of Zurich is inviting applications for a PhD Assistantship in English Literature (60%). The position starts on 1 February 2027 and is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of extension for up to three additional years.

This is a postgraduate PhD opening for candidates with a completed MA in English Literature who want to develop an original doctoral project. The chair is led by Prof. Dr. Barbara Straumann, and the project should intersect with the chair’s research areas: English literature since 1800, especially the long nineteenth century and its afterlife, gender studies, economic criticism, intermediality, and film.

Responsibilities include independent work on a PhD project, conference papers, publications, applications for external funding, independent teaching at BA level (two hours per week), and support for research and administrative tasks at the chair.

Applicants should have an outstanding MA degree, strong knowledge of literary history and critical theory, didactic skills, teamwork ability, and excellent communication in English. German competence is expected or should be acquired within the first two years.

The role is based in Zurich, Switzerland, with access to library services and IT facilities, a workspace in the department, and flexible working arrangements including up to 40% home office. The application deadline is 18 September 2026.

To apply, submit a single PDF containing a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates, at least two references with addresses, a 3–4 page PhD project description, and a writing sample (ideally a chapter from the MA thesis).
