About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Advanced Physical Security of Embedded Systems in the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology (IIK), with research activity linked to the Hardware security and Reverse Engineering Laboratory (HRE Lab) in Gjøvik, Norway.

The project focuses on embedded systems, hardware security, cybersecurity, side-channel analysis, fault injection, cryptographic implementations, reverse engineering, AI/ML-assisted analysis, and quantitative security assessment. The successful candidate will conduct experimental research on physical attack surfaces such as power and electromagnetic leakage, voltage/clock/EM fault injection, timing and memory/bus behaviour, and countermeasure evaluation. The work also includes developing automated experimentation workflows, datasets, reusable testbeds, and robust evidence-based methods for hardware security assurance.

This is a full-time PhD position. The appointment normally includes a salary of NOK 580,000 per year (depending on qualifications and seniority), with a 3-year doctoral period plus 12 months of career promotion work. The candidate must be admitted to the PhD programme in Information Security and Communication Technology within three months of starting.

Eligibility highlights: a relevant Master’s degree in information security, cybersecurity, electronics engineering, electrical engineering, embedded systems, computer science, or a closely related field; a master’s thesis or equivalent independent project of at least 30 ECTS; strong academic results (B or better on NTNU’s scale or equivalent); and excellent English communication skills. Preferred experience includes side-channel analysis, fault injection, embedded platforms, FPGAs, cryptographic hardware, hardware reverse engineering, firmware analysis, and machine learning or signal processing.

Deadline: 1 October 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no and include the required documents listed in the advertisement.
