About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a 3-year PhD Candidate position at the Gjærevoll Centre for Biodiversity Foresight Analyses in Trondheim, Norway. The project sits at the intersection of biodiversity science, spatial ecology, landscape ecology, land use, renewable energy, and social-ecological systems, with a strong focus on assessing biodiversity values in areas affected by the energy transition.
The PhD will explore how biodiversity impacts of energy pathways relate to the perceived importance of natural habitats by local populations. Methods may include ecological fieldwork, biodiversity modelling, participatory and citizen-based mapping, spatial data analysis, and social-ecological systems analysis. The candidate will work primarily at the Gjærevoll Centre and contribute to the NOTRAP centre and NTNU Energy activities.
Eligibility highlights: a Master's degree in ecology or a closely related field; strong academic record; documented quantitative/computational skills; preferably experience with spatial data analysis and biodiversity modelling; good English communication skills. Experience in conservation, nature management, participatory research, interdisciplinary work, and Scandinavian language skills are advantageous.
Funding: the position is funded by NTNU Energy and linked to NOTRAP. Salary is normally NOK 580,000 per year, and the role includes project working capital and standard NTNU employee benefits.
Application deadline: 13 November 2026. Apply online via Jobbnorge and include a cover letter, CV, transcripts and diplomas, thesis or draft thesis, relevant publications, and three referees. If your education was completed abroad, include the required documentation of scope and quality.
Supervisor: Researcher Irja Ida Ratikainen is listed as main supervisor, with an interdisciplinary supervision team from NTNU faculties.
