About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a 3-year full-time PhD position in causal machine learning for the societal impact of migraine treatments. The position is hosted by the Norwegian Centre for Headache Research (NorHead) at the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neuromedicine and Movement Science, in Trondheim, Norway.

The project sits at the intersection of medical science, statistics, computer science, public health, epidemiology, and neuroscience. The selected candidate will work with a nationwide multimodal research database including registry data, health surveys, genomics, metabolomics, clinical trials, and headache diaries to estimate individualized and population-level treatment effects (ITE/CATE) on outcomes such as sick leave, healthcare utilization, and productivity loss.

The post is embedded in an interdisciplinary and international environment, with collaborators in Norway, the UK, Denmark, Spain, and UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology. The role includes doctoral training, research, publications, dissemination, and participation in meetings, conferences, and workshops.

Eligibility highlights: a relevant Master's degree (medicine, data science, AI, statistics, biostatistics, pharmacology/pharmacy, public health, or epidemiology), strong quantitative and analytical skills, a strong academic record, admission eligibility for NTNU's PhD programme, and good written and spoken English. Experience with Nordic health registers, machine learning, causal ML, and Python is preferred.

Funding: the position is funded by the Norwegian Centre on AI for Decisions (aiD) and linked to NorHead. Gross salary is normally NOK 550,800 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. The position is conditional on external funding.

Application deadline: 2026-09-01. Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no with a cover letter, transcripts, diplomas, CV, thesis copy/draft, relevant publications, and three referees.
