About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Amsterdam in the project “Agents of doubt: A novel framework for understanding the impact of synthetic content on adolescents’ knowledge formation.”
The project focuses on adolescents, AI-generated/synthetic content, mis/disinformation, science communication, and how young people form knowledge, experience epistemic uncertainty, and develop epistemic agency in a media environment shaped by synthetic text, audio, images, and video.
The PhD researchers will be embedded in the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) and the Youth and Media Entertainment Program Group, working with Jochen Peter and Toni van der Meer.
Research methods include (panel) surveys, lab experiments, focus groups, data donation, and quantitative/qualitative data analysis. The dissertation is expected to be paper-based and written in English, with publication of sub-studies in relevant journals.
This is a four-year PhD position funded by the Dutch Research Foundation (NWO). The salary starts at €3,204 gross/month and rises to €4,051 gross/month in the final year, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. The role also includes teaching-related tasks (10% of time) and teaching Bachelor’s students.
Eligibility highlights: a research master’s degree in Communication Science or a related social science field; experience with digital communication, AI, developmental research, or misinformation; strong quantitative methods and statistical analysis skills; and excellent English. Dutch is a plus.

What's required
A research master’s degree in Communication Science or another relevant social science discipline such as Political Science, Sociology, or (Social) Psychology is required. Applicants should have experience with digital communication, artificial intelligence, developmental research, and/or mis/disinformation; quantitative methods such as panel surveys, lab experiments, and data donation; quantitative statistical analysis, with longitudinal analysis as a plus; and preferably focus groups and qualitative data analysis. Excellent spoken and written English is required, Dutch is a plus. Candidates should be motivated, open to feedback, committed to open science, able to work independently and in a team, eager to learn, organized, flexible, and detail-oriented.
