About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Exercise and Brain Health – The MolEx Studies at the Cardiac Exercise Research Group (CERG), Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, in Trondheim, Norway.
The project sits at the intersection of exercise physiology, brain health, Alzheimer’s disease, molecular medicine, and multi-omics. The doctoral work is part of the MolEx programme, which studies how acute and long-term exercise changes the molecular composition of human blood and how exercise-induced circulating molecules may protect the brain. The PhD candidate will contribute to three coordinated randomized clinical studies involving healthy younger adults, healthy older adults, and individuals in the early phase of Alzheimer’s disease.
Research activities include supervised exercise training, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, cognitive testing, blood sampling logistics, and analysis of large-scale molecular data such as proteomics, metabolomics, small non-coding RNAs, and blood-based Alzheimer biomarkers. The candidate will also develop and lead sub-projects, publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at conferences, and write and defend a doctoral thesis.
Eligibility highlights: a completed master’s degree in a relevant field, strong academic performance (B or better on NTNU’s scale), documented clinical and/or laboratory research experience, and excellent English. Experience with bioinformatics, R/Python, omics data, exercise testing, cognitive testing, and work with older adults or patient groups is preferred. Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is an advantage.
Funding and terms: fixed-term full-time PhD position for 3 years; salary normally NOK 580,000 per year (depending on qualifications and seniority). The post includes working capital for the project and access to a strong international research environment at NTNU and St. Olavs University Hospital.

What's required
Completed master’s degree (minimum 120 ECTS) in exercise physiology, human physiology, molecular biology, biomedicine, neuroscience, medicine, medical technology, or a related field; strong academic background with master’s average equivalent to B or better according to NTNU’s grading scale; documented experience with clinical and/or laboratory research; excellent written and oral English; must meet admission requirements for the Medical Faculty’s PhD programme. Preferred: bioinformatics and large-scale omics analysis experience, basic R and/or Python programming, exercise testing or supervision of exercise training, cognitive testing and/or clinical research with older adults or patient groups, publications or conference presentations, and Norwegian or another Scandinavian language is an advantage.
