About this position
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position in Hard Rock Geothermal Drilling and AI-Driven Drilling Optimization. Based in the Department of Geosciences, this opportunity is at the intersection of advanced drilling technology, geothermal energy, and artificial intelligence. The research environment is highly collaborative, involving the Well & Reservoir and Engineering Geology & Rock Mechanics groups, and offers access to international research networks and strong industry connections.
The project focuses on developing next-generation drilling technologies and AI-driven optimization methods for geothermal wells in Norway’s challenging igneous and metamorphic rock formations. Key research areas include high-frequency hydraulic hammers, directional drilling, multilateral well concepts, thermodynamic aspects of deep drilling, and operational strategies to increase rate of penetration and reduce costs. The candidate will explore bit wear mechanisms, drilling fluid challenges, and real-time anomaly detection using machine learning and digital twin technologies. The integration of physical modeling and AI/ML approaches aims to improve drillability, optimize drilling parameters, and enable cost-effective geothermal well construction.
Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree (Petroleum, Mechanical Engineering, Rock Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, or Geomechanics) equivalent to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at master’s level. Strong academic performance (B or better on NTNU’s grading scale) and proficiency in English are required. Preferred qualifications include experience in geothermal drilling, drill bits, drilling fluids, hard rock drilling, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and Python programming. Personal qualities such as independence, motivation, initiative, and the ability to present and discuss research are valued.
The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, with a 3-year employment contract and a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. Additional benefits include free Norwegian language training at basic level (A2), favorable pension terms, and access to employee benefits. The working environment is open, inclusive, and diverse, with career guidance and support throughout the PhD period.
To apply, candidates must submit their application electronically via Jobbnorge.no by April 19, 2026. Required documents include transcripts and diplomas, CV, Master’s thesis or draft, project outline, motivation letter, publications, certificates, and contact information for three referees. If education was completed abroad, documentation of scope and quality is necessary. Applications are assessed based on information received by the deadline.
Supervision will be provided by Associate Professor Behzad Elahifar, Professor Bjørn Syvert Frengstad, and Associate Professor Randi Kalskin Ramstad. For questions about the position, applicants may contact the supervisors via email. The research will contribute to Norway’s geothermal energy development, combining deep wells with seasonal heat storage solutions and advancing sustainable energy technologies.
NTNU is committed to diversity, equality, and a creative, critical, and respectful academic environment. The university encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds and aims to increase the proportion of women in scientific positions. The city of Trondheim offers a vibrant cultural scene, excellent welfare services, and opportunities for education and family life.
