PhD Candidate in Hard Rock Geothermal Drilling and AI-Driven Drilling Optimization
The Department of Geosciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate position in Hard Rock Geothermal Drilling and AI-Driven Drilling Optimization. This PhD position is at the forefront of geothermal energy and drilling technology, with research conducted in collaboration between the Well & Reservoir and Engineering Geology & Rock Mechanics groups. The project addresses the unique challenges of drilling in Norway’s igneous and metamorphic rock formations, leveraging decades of Norwegian petroleum research to innovate in drilling systems, bit design, drilling fluids, and downhole thermodynamics. The research aims to improve drilling efficiency, reduce costs, and support the development of deep geothermal wells and seasonal thermal energy storage solutions such as GeoTermos.
Key research topics include:
Hard-Rock Drilling Technologies: High-frequency hydraulic hammers, directional drilling methods, multilateral drilling concepts, thermodynamic aspects of deep drilling, and operational factors to increase rate of penetration (ROP).
Drilling Challenges in Crystalline Formations: Bit wear mechanisms, cutter degradation, drilling fluid challenges (lubrication, cooling, rheology, fluid-rock incompatibilities), and strategies to minimize non-productive time (NPT) through real-time detection and mitigation.
Data-Driven Drilling Optimization: Development of AI/ML models for drillability prediction, real-time parameter optimization, anomaly detection, and integration of physical modeling, digital twins, and data-driven decision systems.
Geothermal Solutions for Norway: Assessment of geothermal well concepts, integration with seasonal heat storage (GeoTermos), and short-term PCM-based storage.
The successful candidate will conduct high-quality research, develop and apply numerical, analytical, and data-driven models, publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at conferences, and contribute to popular-science dissemination. Active participation in research groups, international activities, and career-promoting events is expected.
Eligibility:
Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree in Petroleum or Mechanical Engineering, Rock Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, or Geomechanics. The degree must correspond to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at master's level. Master's students may apply but must obtain and document the degree before starting. A strong academic background (grade B or better) is required. Good written and oral English skills are essential. Preferred qualifications include industrial or research experience, knowledge of geothermal drilling, drill bits, drilling fluids, hard rock drilling, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and Python skills. Personal qualities such as independence, structured work, initiative, motivation, and ability to present and discuss research are emphasized.
Funding:
The position offers a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum for a 3-year employment period, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund deducted. Additional benefits include free Norwegian language training at basic level (A2), favorable terms as a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and access to employee benefits.
