About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position in Integrated Predictive Maintenance in Wind Energy, hosted at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics (ITK) in Trondheim. This position is part of the Northwind research center and closely integrated with the Norwegian Center on AI for Decision (aiD) and NTNU's strategic area Energy. The research aims to advance the integration of maintenance processes with the economics of wind energy, focusing on minimizing downtime, managing risks, and optimizing inspection and maintenance costs through data-driven, probabilistic AI methods and optimization-based decision making.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment with strong collaborations across departments (Energy and Economics) and industry partners. The project offers opportunities for international engagement, including conferences and research stays abroad, and emphasizes validation of research on industrial use-cases. The position is supervised by Professor Sebastien Gros, director of the Norwegian Center on AI for Decision.

Key duties include: completing doctoral education, conducting high-quality research, publishing academic and popular science work, active participation in Northwind, aiD, and NTNU Energy, and contributing to international research activities. The position is for three years, with a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800 (subject to qualifications and seniority), and includes membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, working capital for project implementation, and free basic Norwegian language training if desired.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree (Automation, Cybernetics, Mathematics, Electric Energy, Industrial Economics, Data Science, or equivalent) corresponding to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at master's level. Master students may apply but must complete the degree before starting. A strong academic record (B or better on NTNU's scale) is required; exceptions may be made for candidates with demonstrated suitability. Strong skills in mathematics, probabilities, optimization, and programming are essential. Preferred qualifications include experience with AI/probabilistic AI/Machine Learning, numerical optimization, MPC, programming (Python, C), predictive maintenance, fatigue, and fault detection. Good oral and written English skills are required. Admission to the PhD program in Engineering Cybernetics within three months of employment is mandatory.

NTNU offers a supportive, diverse, and inclusive work environment, career guidance, and a mentor program for new employees. The university values creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration, and strives for gender balance and diversity in scientific positions. The city of Trondheim provides a high quality of life, excellent public services, and a rich cultural scene.

Application process: Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no, including all required documents (transcripts, diplomas, CV, master's thesis or draft, motivation letter, publications, certificates, and contact information for three referees) in English. The application deadline is 20 May 2026. For further information, contact Professor Sebastien Gros ([email protected]) or HR Consultant Berit Dahl ([email protected]).
