About this position

The Department of Physics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is offering a PhD position in Materials Physics, focusing on the advanced characterization of aluminium alloys produced from post-consumer scrap. This role is part of the RACE (Recycled Aluminium Corrosion Engineering) project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council, and aims to develop next-generation aluminium alloys with superior corrosion resistance and high recycled content for automotive applications. The successful candidate will investigate microstructure–property relationships and corrosion mechanisms in high-scrap aluminium alloys, using advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and complementary techniques such as SEM and EBSD. Key responsibilities include performing detailed microstructural studies, developing high-throughput data analysis methods for TEM experiments, and exploring corrosion initiation and propagation mechanisms. The research will be conducted at the Trondheim node of the NORTEM/TEM Gemini Center, in close collaboration with SINTEF and industrial partners Hydro Aluminium and Benteler Automotive Raufoss. The project supports sustainability goals by reducing reliance on primary aluminium, lowering CO₂ emissions, and promoting circular economy principles. The PhD candidate will play a central role in WP3, focusing on microstructure–property correlations using state-of-the-art characterization techniques. Duties include completing doctoral education, publishing academic and popular science work, participating in the TEM Gemini research group, attending international conferences or research stays, and collaborating with industry partners. Applicants must have a relevant Master's degree in Physics, Nanotechnology, Materials Science, or equivalent, with a strong academic record (B or better on NTNU's scale). Experience with experimental work in physics, nanotechnology, or material science, and basic programming skills are required. Preferred qualifications include hands-on experience with electron microscopy (especially TEM), industrial problem-solving, electrochemistry, programming/data processing in Python, and Norwegian language skills. The position offers training and access to advanced instruments, career guidance, and favorable employment terms, including a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum for three years and membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
