About this position

PhD candidate in Mechanics of Materials and Constructions at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium.

The Faculty of Engineering, Department of Mechanica van materialen en constructies, and the Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures (M²S) research group are seeking a full-time PhD candidate with a doctoral grant. The project sits at the intersection of mechanical engineering, materials science, and civil engineering, with research themes including advanced characterisation and monitoring of materials and structures, mechanics-driven design and optimisation of high-performance and sustainable materials and structures, and adaptive and multifunctional material systems.

The successful candidate will work with supervisors to shape a PhD project aligned with their strengths and research interests, while contributing to international conferences and publications in leading journals. The appointment is intended for a four-year PhD and includes limited teaching and departmental support duties such as exercise sessions, laboratory sessions, project-based learning, promotional activities, and possible service on councils or committees.

Eligibility highlights include motivation for high-quality research, teamwork, communication, and openness to both independent work and collaborative departmental life. Some educational activities are conducted in Dutch and others in English. The home base is the Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene).

Applications should be submitted via the VUB jobs portal using the official vacancy page.
