About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate position in Risk-Based Power System Operation and Utilisation of Transformer Capacity at the Department of Electric Energy in Trondheim, Norway.

The project is part of the Knowledge-building Project “Increasing Emergency Load Limits for Transformers” (KSP UPLOAD), with SINTEF Energy Research as project owner and NTNU as a participating partner. The research focuses on liquid-immersed power transformers, power grid capacity, reliability of supply, and how increased transformer loading can create additional transfer capability while managing risk.

Research topics include electric power engineering, power systems, risk-based operation, optimal power flow, market coupling, reliability analysis, and socio-economic assessment of operating transformers beyond nameplate limits. The PhD work will examine how higher loading limits affect the trade-off between reliability and market capacity, and how additional transfer capability can be allocated across day-ahead, intraday, and balancing markets.

This is a full-time PhD position for 3 years, with a possible extension of 3–12 months for career-enhancing activities. The position is conditional on external funding and final confirmation of funding availability from KSP UPLOAD. Salary is normally NOK 580,000 per year depending on qualifications and seniority.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Electric Power Engineering or a closely related specialization in electric power/energy systems, have strong academic results, meet doctoral admission requirements, and demonstrate proficient Python programming skills. English proficiency at B2 level is required; C1 and Scandinavian language skills are advantageous. A relevant Master’s thesis is preferred. Security clearance is required.

To apply, submit the application electronically via Jobbnorge.no before 2026-10-19. Required documents include a cover letter, project outline, CV, transcripts and diplomas, thesis documentation, publications if any, English language proof if relevant, and contact information for three referees.
