About this position
PhD Candidate in Robotics and Intelligent Mechatronic Systems for Automated In Vitro Platforms at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Trondheim, Norway.
This PhD position is part of the industrial research project vitro.scale, developed in collaboration with Vitroscope AS and SINTEF. The research focuses on building an automated high-throughput platform for physiologically relevant cell research by combining robotics, microfluidics, advanced sensors, cloud-connected software, and artificial intelligence. The PhD work at NTNU will be centered on automation, robotics, mechatronic design, sensor integration, and intelligent experimental systems that support scalable operation of the platform.
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary environment with expertise in product development, robotics, automation, digitalization, and biomedical technologies. The project is highly applied and aims to contribute to future drug discovery, personalized medicine, and advanced animal-free testing methods. The work involves designing, prototyping, and experimentally validating robotic and mechatronic systems for handling, positioning, and monitoring biological experiments, as well as developing integrated hardware-software solutions for real-time monitoring and automated decision support.
Applicants should have a relevant Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, engineering cybernetics, product development, industrial design engineering, or a closely related field, with a strong academic record. The post also requires experience in at least two relevant technical areas such as robotics and automation, embedded systems, sensor integration, mechanical prototyping, experimental methods, and Python-based software development. Strong English skills and the ability to conduct engineering work independently are essential. Preferred experience includes C/C++, Arduino, CAD, motion control, finite-element analysis, rapid prototyping, data analytics, machine learning, and computer vision.
The appointment is for 3 years and is funded through the Research Council of Norway Innovation Project vitro.scale, with external funding from Vitroscope AS. The gross annual salary is normally NOK 580,000, subject to qualification and seniority. The position is based in Trondheim at NTNU.

Applicants must meet the admission requirements for the faculty’s Doctoral Programme. A relevant Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Engineering Cybernetics, Product Development, Industrial Design Engineering, or a closely related discipline is required, including a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master’s thesis. Candidates should have a strong academic background with an average grade of B or better according to NTNU’s grading scale, or an equally strong academic foundation if letter grades are not used. Experience in at least two of the following is required: robotics and automation; mechatronics and embedded systems; sensor integration, calibration, experimental measurement systems, and automated data acquisition; mechanical design and prototyping; experimental methods and testing; programming and software development, specifically Python-based engineering software development and hardware interfacing. Applicants must have excellent oral and written English skills, demonstrated ability to independently conduct engineering projects, and experience taking engineering systems from concept through design, manufacturing, assembly, calibration, testing, and validation. Preferred qualifications include Python-based software development, real-time data acquisition and sensor systems, Arduino/C/C++/embedded programming and hardware control, motion-control systems, CAD, finite-element analysis, rapid prototyping, signal processing, data analytics, control systems, machine learning or computer vision, multidisciplinary product development, and Norwegian language skills at mother tongue or level 3.
