About this position
PhD opportunity in seaweed biology and land-based cultivation at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)
The Department of Biology at NTNU is recruiting a PhD Candidate in Seaweed Biology and Land-Based Cultivation. The project sits within Marine Science and the research team of Prof. Kjell Inge Reitan, in collaboration with SINTEF Ocean and the SFI Seaweed centre funded by the Research Council of Norway.
The research focus is the reproduction and early life-stage development of the red alga Palmaria palmata, together with optimization of vegetative cultivation in land-based, fish farm effluent-based IMTA systems. This is a strong fit for applicants interested in marine biology, marine biotechnology, aquaculture, and applied environmental science related to seaweed production and sustainable blue economy research.
The position is based in Trondheim, Norway, with experimental work at NTNU and SINTEF Ocean facilities. It is a 3-year PhD position and is funded by NTNU in collaboration with the SFI Seaweed project. Salary is normally NOK 550,800 per year before deductions, depending on qualifications and seniority.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree in marine biology, marine biotechnology, aquaculture, or a related biological/environmental science discipline; the degree must be completed before starting and no later than 2026-10-01. A strong background in marine macroalgae cultivation is required, and experience with marine microalgae is an advantage. Excellent English is required, and some applicants must provide TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, or CPE results. Experience with Palmaria palmata is especially encouraged.
How to apply: submit the application electronically via Jobbnorge.no before the deadline. Include transcripts and diplomas, CV, certificates, a copy or summary of the Master’s thesis, a motivation letter, any publications or relevant research work, language test documentation if needed, and contact details for three referees.
Deadline: 2026-09-21.
