About this position

PhD opening at Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Societal readiness for AI-supported Life Cycle Assessment of buildings.

This position is based in the Energy and Environment Group at the Department of Architecture and Technology, with collaboration involving SINTEF Industry, NTNU Social Research, and related research centres/projects in sustainable buildings and neighbourhoods. The project sits at the intersection of Architecture, Environmental Science, Computer Science, and Sociology/Science and Technology Studies.

The research examines how AI tools such as machine learning, large language models, and automated workflows are changing life cycle assessment practice in the architecture, engineering, and construction sectors. Key themes include transparency, methodological integrity, accountability, trust, professional judgement, and institutional preparedness in environmental decision-making.

Eligibility highlights: applicants need a relevant master's degree (Architecture, Industrial Ecology, Science and Technology Studies, Computer Science, or equivalent), a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS, strong academic results (B or better or equivalent), excellent English, strong analytical ability, and motivation for the topic. Experience with LCA, AI, programming (Python/MATLAB/R), and Norwegian/Scandinavian language skills are preferred.

Funding and conditions: 3-year PhD employment at NTNU. Salary is normally NOK 580,000 per year depending on qualifications and seniority, plus standard employee benefits and project working capital. The post is physically located in Trondheim, Norway.

Application deadline: 17 November 2026. Applications must be submitted through Jobbnorge and include transcripts, diplomas, CV, thesis copy/draft, motivation letter, research sketch, publication list if relevant, supporting documents, and three referees.
