About this position
PhD opportunity at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication (ESHCC) for the NWO Vidi project “That’s Women’s Work!” on the transimperial history of women’s work / gendered labour (1600–1900).
The project combines archival research and computational text analysis to study how European colonial expansion shaped ideas about women’s work across colonies and European metropoles. The successful candidate will pursue an article-based PhD dissertation as part of a collaborative research team led by Dr. Natália da Silva Perez, focusing on either Pernambuco or Atlantic Africa (e.g. Senegambia, Gold Coast, Angola).
Research and methods include multilingual archival work, transcription with Transkribus, manual correction of handwritten/printed texts, qualitative analysis using interpretivist/social reproduction/intersectional approaches, and quantitative/digital humanities methods such as NLP and statistics. The role also includes conference presentations, co-authored and single-authored publications, and teaching in the history department.
Eligibility highlights: a research master’s degree (or equivalent relevant master’s) by the start date; excellent academic English; strong knowledge of at least one additional language relevant to the case; interest in early modern/colonial history, gender history, and the Colonial Atlantic; and willingness to work with computational/digital methods. Cultural sensitivity is important when working with archival material relating to enslaved and colonized peoples.
Funding: fully funded salaried PhD position under the Dutch university CAO-NU, with a gross monthly salary of €3,204–€4,051 on a full-time 38-hour basis. The contract starts on 26 October 2026 (or later by agreement) and is initially for one year, with possible extension for three more years after positive assessment.
