About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Underwater Foundation Models in the Department of Engineering Cybernetics, based in Trondheim, Norway.
The project focuses on underwater robotics, robot perception, robot navigation, foundation models, embodied AI, and machine learning. The research aims to develop novel foundation models for underwater robot perception and navigation, with broader goals of unified modeling across air, ground, and marine robot embodiments. The work includes simulation tools, scalable neural architectures, underwater light modeling, and high-quality synthetic and real underwater datasets.
The PhD candidate will be supervised by Professor Kostas Alexis and will work with the Autonomous Robots Lab (ARL) and the Norwegian Centre for Embodied AI. The position is part of a larger national effort in embodied AI and physical AI, with collaborations across robotics and AI groups.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master's degree in cybernetics, control systems, or an equivalent field with strong training in robotics, computer vision, or machine learning. A strong academic record is required, including a master's average of B or better (or equivalent). Applicants must also satisfy NTNU doctoral admission requirements.
Preferred profile: solid background in robot perception and navigation, modern machine learning, C++ and Python programming, ROS, simulators for robotic systems, and real-world robotic implementation experience. Strong mathematical skills and ability to work independently are emphasized.
Funding and terms: the position is a 3-year PhD appointment with a gross salary normally from NOK 550,800 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. The position is conditional on external funding.
Application deadline: 25 August 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no.
